Usually, executives have a clear understanding of the financial and economic characteristics that they are trying to optimize. However, translating these characteristics, in terms of operations (production capacities, volumes and types of products to be manufactured, etc.) is rarely straightforward. Moreover, once such key operation parameters are established, it becomes apparent that certain departments have opposing objectives. For example, manufacturing wants longer runs and fewer changes; distribution wants smaller inventories; logistics does not want to handle small volumes of products, etc. Resolving such conflicting objectives, identifying the vision that will unify and integrate stakeholders, and implementing solutions that support such strategies is very challenging and requires commitment, perseverance and experience to accomplish.
